Understanding VBODMAS Rules

The V in VBODMAS stands for Vinculum. When a vinculum is present in a math expression, you must solve the operation underneath the bar first, before any other bracket or order of operations.

VBODMAS Hierarchy Pyramid
VVinculum (Bar Bracket)̅x̅+̅y̅
1Brackets ( ) [ ] Parentheses
2Orders (Powers/Roots)x² √x
3Division & Multiplication÷ ×
4Addition & Subtraction+ −

Vinculum vs Standard Brackets

While standard brackets enclose terms, a vinculum is drawn directly above them. Both serve grouping functions, but vinculums always take immediate priority.

Vinculum Example Comparison
✓ Vinculum Flow
12 - 3 × ̅5̅ ̅-̅ ̅2̅
1. Vinculum: 5 - 2 = 3
2. Multiply: 3 × 3 = 9
3. Subtract: 12 - 9 = 3
= 3 ✓

Vinculum FAQ

Common questions about the vinculum and VBODMAS rules.

A vinculum is a horizontal bar placed over a group of terms in a mathematical expression. It acts as a grouping symbol (like brackets) but has the absolute highest priority in VBODMAS.
VBODMAS stands for Vinculum, Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.
The vinculum specifies an immediate sub-grouping that must be calculated first, even inside nested brackets.
Wrap the terms under the vinculum with a line above, or in this calculator, wrap them in square brackets with a vinculum toggle, or input them using our interactive vinculum button.
