Understanding Exponents in BODMAS

Exponents (powers, indices, orders) are the O in BODMAS. They must be resolved immediately after brackets, before any other arithmetic.

Exponent BODMAS Example
✓ Order of Exponents
3 × 2³ + 5
1. Exponent: 2³ = 8
2. Multiply: 3×8 = 24
3. Add: 24+5 = 29
= 29 ✓

Exponent Rules

Key mathematical rules when working with exponents.

Exponent Rules Guide
✖️
Product Rule
xᵃ × xᵇ = x⁽ᵃ⁺ᵇ⁾
Quotient Rule
xᵃ ÷ xᵇ = x⁽ᵃ⁻ᵇ⁾
🔄
Power of Power
(xᵃ)ᵇ = x⁽ᵃˣᵇ⁾
0️⃣
Zero Exponent
x⁰ = 1 (for x ≠ 0)

Exponents FAQ

Common questions about powers and indices in BODMAS.

Exponents fall under "O" (Orders), the second priority after Brackets and before Division/Multiplication.
Use ^ symbol. E.g. 4^2 for 4 squared, 2^3 for 2 cubed.
Wrap in parentheses: (-2)^2 = 4. Without: -2^2 = -(4) = -4.
Yes. 9^0.5 = √9 = 3. Use parentheses for fractions: 8^(1/3) = 2.
